CAN YOU EXPLAIN THIS TO ME?

The current service is subsidised. This includes, the server running costs, a new 3 fold backup regime + IP address rentals, recurring software licences.

THE HUMAN COST

OK, so there is lots of automation, but the kit doesn’t run itself. Pressing the right buttons to make the server run smoothly and fixing problems takes time. And there are server upgrades, migrations and disaster recovery, which take time. Defending the site from hackers and investigating problems and issues arising now takes up a lot more time too.

Then there are the website software updates, which with ever more dependencies to keep on top of is invariably time consuming, as we try and keep it always up to the minute. It used to be a few updates a month, it is now daily updates almost every day of the year.

WHAT HAS THIS TO DO WITH COFFEE?

We don’t often think about how many coffees we buy in a week, which I am sure most of us don’t think twice about.

Indeed some research reported in the gutter press (so there is a high chance it is a made up story), suggests that we visit coffee shops 3 times a week and spend at least £8, if not more each visit.

The Torygraph reported a few years back that: ‘coffee served in a medium-sized £2.20 cappuccino is just 8p … cost of the cup, lid, stirrer, napkin and sugar amounts to 16p. The biggest cost … is the wages paid to staff … (but still only) a quarter of the price.”

Draw your own conclusions.

(The service offered is pretty cheap compared with coffee, or a few beers or even authentic pizza)
